Send Organizers to New Orleans

Big business failed New Orleans. The poor, disabled and elderly paid with their lives. If the New Orleans Business Round Table have their way they will not allow the poor back into New Orleans. In the Wall Street Journal (9/8/05) they call it changing New Orleans’ “demographics.” They will only succeed if we don’t organize.

The Campaign for Renters’ Rights in Oakland, California an anti-poverty, direct action group has sent a full-time organizer to New Orleans to help residents self-organize. We are planning to send more organizers if we can raise additional funds. The CRR has received funding from Carpenters Local 713 and AFSCME Local 444, with Local 444 donating directly to the fund to send organizers to Louisiana.

About the CRR

The CRR has been community organizing with working class and poor people since 1998. In 2004, the CRR's direct action tactics won a major victory when 238 families' federally funded housing vouchers were threatened in Alameda, California. In an ongoing campaign, the CRR has outed a notorious Northern California slumlord at his home, office and church.
